Guidelines for Hosting A Seminar

The most frequently asked questions when planning a seminar are the those about the facilities and grounds that are necessary. In addition it is helpful to know what equipment  is needed.

We have put together the following information to help make your job of planning a Hunt Test Know How Seminar easier. Most of this information has been gathered from observation and from clubs that have previously hosted one of our seminars. We are quite adaptable in almost all details and will work with you to put on the best seminar possible!

SEMINAR SITE LOCATION

The Hunt Test Know How Handler’s seminar is extremely flexible in that it can be presented to fit your resources.  While we feel that the half indoor/half outdoor version is the most successful, it can also be in an entirely indoor setting. There are several factors to consider, some of which include weather, time of the year and available facilities.

All indoor seminars need:

  • overhead projector
  • slide projector
  • flip chart
  • chairs and tables

Indoor/Outdoor seminars need:

  • grounds that are within 5-10 minutes of the indoor facilities

  • shading/overhead cover for participants
  • overhead projector

  • flip chart

  • chairs and tables for indoor session

  • participants must provide their own chairs for outdoor session

  • a small sound system, such as a battery run megaphone can
    be helpful

More about the grounds...The actual amount of space needed for the outdoor session is less than may be expected. There must be adequate parking space for vehicles and this should be close to the land that will be used. For much of the demonstration all that is needed is very simple terrain with little cover.  We do not need complex terrain or cover. While it is nice to have water available, we generally do not have the time to run tests with swims of any kind. If you have questions about the land you have available please contact us.

EQUIPMENT FOR OUTDOOR SESSION

While we aren’t putting on a hunt test, we will still need a considerable amount of equipment to put on the outdoor segment of the seminar. Besides equipment you will need to line up people to work during this portion of the seminar.

Equipment list:

  • Holding blinds ( 2-3 )
  • popper guns and popper loads (training pistols will also work)
  • dead birds (we can use bumpers )
  • duck or pheasant calls
  • decoys (1 dozen maximum- duck or geese)
  • bird bags/buckets/drying rack
  • winger (not necessary, but nice)
  • radios

More information is available on request and cover the topics of publicity, hospitality for handlers, time allowances, our expenses and tips on budgeting a seminar. Please don't hesitate to ask questions.
