Julie Maloit Cairns
Arcata, California


Julie Maloit Cairns has been active in retrievers for 25 years. She has competed with her dogs in conformation, obedience,  field trials, hunt tests and now Hunt Test Seminars. When the AKC Hunt Test program began in 1984, Julie and her club held the first sanctioned test on the West Coast. Since then, Julie has been in demand as a hunt test judge. In 1995 and again in 1998, she was a judge at the Master National Retriever Club test, and has been on its board of directors. A nationally known author, she was the Field Editor for The Golden Retriever News for a decade, and has written two books on the breed. She is well known for her current book, "The Golden Retriever: All That Glitters."

Julie has also accomplished much as an amateur/owner/trainer of her own dogs. Some of the dogs she has owned and trained over the years include Topbrass Malcairn's Zephyr, UD,WCX,**, Malcairn's Brass Fanfare, UD,SH,WCX,** (MH legs), Riverbend's Ragamuffin, MH,WCX,**, Sungold Firequacker, SH,WCX,** (4 MH legs), and Malcairn Miss Firequacker, MH,WCX

 

James M. Drager

Jim Drager has been involved with retrievers for over 18 years as an owner, trainer, competitor, hunt test and field trial judge and recently hunt test seminars. Jim's involvement in retrievers started with J. P. Shamus in obedience as a competitor, then instructor and judge. Shamus went on to become a UD, SH (4 MH legs), WCX,**, and it was through him that Jim became hopelessly hooked on field work with retrievers forever. Jim is more widely known as being the owner/trainer/handler of Maverick- Pine Run’s Top Gun CD, MH,***, 1995 Master National Finalist and the 1999 #7 (tied) Open field trial golden and the proud co-owner of Pine Run’s Raggedy Andi, MH,**, who is his third generation of titled hunt test and field trial dog.

Jim's judging experience spans both coasts of the United States in both hunt tests and field trials. He has judged field events for the Golden Retriever National Specialty twice, as well as the Flat Coated Retriever Society of America's National Specialty twice. Jim's articles have also been published in The Golden Retriever News.

 

Together Julie and Jim combine nearly 45 years of experience in training and competing in hunt tests and field trials. Their combined judging assignments total over 100! Their dogs have been completely owner trained and handled to all of their accomplishments. They've been involved in every aspect of field event from competitor and judge to event chairperson, test secretary marshal, gunner and bird thrower. They are not only educators and communicators, but also constant students of the sport.
