Handlers Seminar
 Reviews and Comments

"Last Fall the GTCGRC sponsored an excellent seminar called 'How To Prepare and Improve Your Dog for Hunt Tests'

Every participant came away with clear understanding of exactly what it takes to prepare their dog to successfully complete an AKC  hunt test.

The presenters were Julie Cairns and Jim Drager. Both of them have many years of experience training and running their Golden Retrievers in hunt tests and field trials. They are also experienced AKC Hunt Test judges. Besides that, they are warm, friendly and down right entertaining. So the two day seminar packed full of information and interesting discussion just flew by.

The seminar covered the following basic topics: origin of  hunt tests, how to enter a hunt test, evaluating your dog’s readiness, requirements at all test levels, understanding the basic marking concepts presented in tests, marking expectations, acceptable blinds and handling, what judges are looking for, hunt tests 'dressings' and more.

Although reading the AKC rule book is of course the place to start,  it is really not enough. The wide variety of hunt test set ups and different judging expectations can discourage the most enthusiastic newcomer. Many people are interested in training for field work but don’t know where to start.  Others try training, but get discouraged when they fail because they don’t understand the hunt test 'game'

More education is the answer. I strongly encourage you to ask Julie and Jim to present such a seminar in your area."

"Thirty-plus field enthusiasts got their money’s worth and then some at the GRCCNY sponsored hunt test handler seminar at Three Rivers, Sept. 9-10.

Attendees were treated to a truly unique presentation targeted at improving their knowledge and handler skills for retriever field events.

Split equally between classroom and field work, topics ranged from learning the rules, to understanding why dogs perform as they do in the field, and how to prepare both handler and dog for improved performance.

The group was unanimous in their post-seminar evaluation of  'exceptional'. Participating members new to the sport went away vowing to continue educating themselves and their dogs. Thank you again, Julie and Jim!"

"I have solicited feedback from people who attended the seminar and EVERYONE was very complimentary in terms of both content and presenters. Your seminar has given a me a training plan and goals to reach, whereas before I was lacking direction of any kind."
